Guest Post: Sitting Pretty on Charles Eames Top Chairs

    Written by Rebecca Jones

Charles Eames was an American designer who helped change the face of 20th century, modern furniture design with his extensive portfolio of work. His enduring pieces are a stunning marriage of comfort and functionality. Charles Eames furniture has remained at the forefront of modern furniture design, influencing numerous subsequent and contemporary designers.

    Ergonomic Paradise

With the ever-increasing hours we seem to work in the Western world, it is essential that we look after our weary skeletons to ensure that all our hard work is not futile and we can live long, happy lives. Enough of the corny stuff, in all seriousness though, investing in a well-made, ergonomic chair is the best measure to protect your back and promote optimum spinal health.

Charles Eames was a pioneering force in the furniture design world. His innovative vision and exciting designs lead him to create a number of pieces for an office environment including the Office Aluminium Group Chair EA119 Mesh. This is a task chair which is designed with the intention of being used at a desk. This chair is exceptionally comfortable due to the mesh panels and is also adjustable which further enhances the comfort factor and has a swivel functionality enabling the user to move 360 degrees.

The original intention for this piece was for outdoor use, hence the mesh fabric as it is hard-wearing, durable and immensely functional. The original mesh design was quickly discontinued and black leather took over as the material of choice. In 1969, the chair was further updated and a soft, padded version with cushions was created.

This chair has an exceptionally sturdy aluminium framework and is arguably one of the first executive chairs. It is also light, versatile and the design enables the chair to adapt to the sitter’s body which makes for maximum comfort. The high back also guarantees that your back is perfectly supported. Since it’s creation, this piece has become an office essential.

Trends from the NYIGF: Natural Fibers, Geometric Patterns and Raw Wood

Rope Study: in Natural and White from Natural Curiosity
    The Year of Pretty
The NYIGF ended earlier today in a most positive note. And that isn’t necessarily because the fair was set aside as being particularly exciting, but rather it was because the materials on display were aesthetically pleasing and comfortably safe to unwind with. Natural fibers such as abaca, wool, hemp, jute, and sisal were seen as strong trends throughout the show. At one point, I saw so much jute, I thought I was transported to a street fair at The Philippines.
On Monday afternoon, I ran into interior designer, and former contributing editor at Elle Decor, Elaine Griffin, while I was at Pier 94. Elaine shared with me some of the trends that she noticed from this closely watched gift fair. “Most of the trends that we saw today were launched last year, and so this year, they’re playing catch up. These are not necessarily new.” So I had to ask, what’s new?

“We’re seeing raw wood, and geometric patterns everywhere. Mind you, this trend was already launched last year, but it is now expending into fabrics, rugs, and furniture. Colors such as yellow, green are just exploding! I think that green is still a very popular, and important color. Overall, what we’re seeing is a lot of pretty at this fair. This is the year of pretty because in a time of economic uncertainty, people want pretty. The vendors want something that is going to sell, and pretty is safe.”

Graphic patterns such as these were seen everywhere at the show, from hand towels, boxes, furniture, to even water bottles

The Condotti collection from Dransfield & Ross can deliver a dreamy, fairytale-like atmosphere to any bedrooms. This princess duvet was too splendid for words. The blue ribbons threaded with the linen fabric made it just that more special

This simple graphic brought a nostalgic feeling to a plain, otherwise unmemorable  bag. The splash of red did add to its appeal – to be sure

Pleasure meeting Fabrice Philippe, of Teo Jasmin.  Fabrice is a famous French designer to the stars. His various fun and trendy bags are household names among celebrities like Paris Hilton, and Brad Pitt. Also, think of gift bags at The Oscars, and the Bafta awards. The popular bags depict various English bulldogs in stylish attire, which are quickly making wave in the US market

    Sitting Pretty!

    Timeless Beauties

Back in October of last year, I published this piece on Stylish By Design, and from time to time, I found myself going back to it, not just for the obvious design genius of Marcel Breuer, Eileen Gray, Thonet, and Le Corbusier (to name a few), but also to remind myself as to what a great chair should feel like. It does not matter what the chair looks like, it’s the way it makes you feel that is important.

This Michael Thonet’s Settee is quite at ease with both traditional, and modern interiors. The outline of this settee is simply beautiful. Bentwood is as modern then, as it is now.
The ULTIMATE in great design and comfort.
    Eileen Gray Transat Chair
For a small and unobtrusive chair, the B-167-3 Lounge Chair by Pierre Paulin is unusually comfortable, not to mention inviting. The shape is much more functional than a casual inspection would suggest.
In contrast to Paulin’s chair, I find the Archair 12 by Poul Kjaerholm to be rather uncomfortable, as the back rung cuts painfully across the spine. But it is an absolute beauty. The chair is greatly influenced by Thonet’s bentwood forms, but it has it’s own and unique fresh take as a tubular steel.
No question, this chaise lounge by Le Corbusier is simply one of the classics for
    complete, egocentric comfort.
The Wassily chair by Marcel Breuer was greatly influenced, believe it or not, by the colonial chairs of long ago. This is a welcoming and beautiful chair, both aesthetically and physcially satisfying.

In such a structure, this functional chair shows the results of imposing preconceived decisions on the logic of forms in combination
