Tête-à-Tête with Renowned Interior Designer, Geoffrey Bradfield
From June 27th to July the 3rd, 2013, Masterpiece London will bring together collectors, exhibitors and curators from around the world for an unparalleled show of fine art, antiques and design. Last month, I had the opportunity to speak with one of the Fair’s co-chairs, international interior designer, Geoffrey Bradfield. Here’s what he had to say about this fresh and exciting new antique fair.High End Weekly™: Why is Masterpiece London such a destination fair for international designers like yourself?Geoffrey Bradfield: I try to get to all the major fairs each year. It is very important to remain current in our industry. Masterpiece London is a major event. My clients always seek quality and innovation. Masterpiece delivers both.
HEW: How long has it been around?
GB: I am honored to be on the American Patron Committee since its conception 4 years ago.
HEW: Do you find that the fair attracts new dealers every year?
GB: Marilyn White has been the driving force behind capturing the American interest in Masterpiece. And yes, the fair has had the foresight and continues to introduce and attract new dealers every year. This is a very important factor, as illustrated by the demise of Grosvenor, which, although prestigious, failed to move with the times.HEW: Is Masterpiece London all about fine and decorative arts?
GB: Masterpiece London encompasses all the decorative arts. It has a very fresh approach and projection. Their image captures the 21st Century spirit of Inclusion.HEW: High End Weekly was proud to feature your last book, A 21st Century Palace, and it was one of our most popular post. Is there a new book in the future?
GB: Thank you very much for your excellent review of our earlier book, A 21st Century Palace. We are very pleased to report that our next book, titled Artistic License, is due this Fall. Because of our presence in Asia, which has expanded enormously, it is being published both in Chinese and in English. My company’s work is predicated, to a large extent, on the use of contemporary art. Thus, the subject of the book is about the joy of collecting and using Art in one’s interiors. - Antique Fairs, Geoffrey Bradfield, Interior Designers, Life and Style, Masterpiece London, Parties, United Kingdom

A Doctor’s Best Kept Secret Unleashed!
Kelly Gallery Study with Jourbet et Petit cerused oakand marble table and Andre Frechet CabinetI’ve long been fascinated with art deco particularly because of its preoccupation with lavish ornamentation, its superb craftsmanship and fine materials. And I feel fortunate to live in a town that is home to some of the most trustworthy art deco dealers in the world, namely Delorenzo, Maison Gerard, Friedman & Vallois, to name a few. Exactly one week to this day, I attended the opening of a gallery that can easily take its place among the rank of the illustrious establishments named above.
For over thirty years Dr. Stephen Kelly, a successful ophthalmologist with a Manhattan practice has been quietly assembling a collection of rare and important Art Deco furniture, fine art and design and filling his ca. 1915 landmark limestone and brick townhouse with these treasures. Now in his 60s, Dr. Kelly has embarked on a second career as a gallery owner. His treasured art deco gallery is nestled between the three floors of his dramatic six-story Upper East Side home. The gallery has now been opened since Wednesday, December 12th. The doctor’s entire collection is an impressive one to be sure. And art deco enthusiasts and collectors now have the opportunity to possess some of the most rarest pieces on the market – a variety of objects by such famed French Art Deco craftsmen as Jacques-Emile Ruhlmann, Jean-Michel Frank, Jean Dunand, Sue et Mare, A.A. Rateau, Eugene Printz, Edgar Brandt and Albert Cheuret, and others.Salon Kelly Gallery with Ruhlman Lorcia Table Center and LeftMost of the fine art deco on view are between 1918 and 1939. Dr. Kelly puts particular emphasis on this period in France between the two world wars as one of the greatest and most productive times for fine and decorative arts. Pieces from this period lend a certain elegance and patina of age to a modern interior, without an 18th or 19th century antique look, and work well with all forms of 20th century fine art.
Kelly Gallery Assorted English Shagreen and Ivory Boxes ca 1925KG Cardeillhac Sterling, Tortoise and Ivory Wine Caddies ca 1930Particular gems from the gallery include a monumental Sèvres urn by Ruhlmann that was one of four from the ocean liner Ile de France – only one other survives and is in the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris.
Also on view is a spectacular straw marquetry cabinet by Jean-Michel Frank; a Rateau giltwood daybed from the home of Jeanne Lanvin; a one-of-a-kind silver and champlevé enamel clock by Jean Goulden, which was exhibited in the Art Deco Exhibition at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London in 2003; a coquille d’oeuf lacquer vase by Dunand from the 1925 Art Deco Exhibition in Paris and exhibited in the 1926 Art Deco Exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York; and a unique amboyna wood table by Ruhlmann originally designed for the French actress Gabrielle Lorcia ca.1930, as well as modernist paintings and works on paper by Christian Bérard, Fernand Leger, Max Ernst and Sonia Delaunay juxtaposed against contemporary masters like Richard Diebenkorn, Jasper Johns and Jean Dubuffet.Important Jean Luce Glass VasesThe gallery features a vast array of vintage silver or alligator photograph frames, crystal and silver perfume bottles and dressing sets, period ceramics and glass, period sterling silver serving pieces, bookends, lamps, classic American guilloche enamel sterling silver doubles cufflinks, 18kt gold doubles cufflinks, shagreen and ivory boxes, cubistic pewter dinanderie vases and other vintage Art Deco gift items that start at around $150, with median prices of $1000 to $10,000.
“I particularly like the rare and beautiful woods used in furniture during this period, frequently decorated with shagreen, ivory, parchment, tortoiseshell or lacquer,” says Dr. Kelly. “I am drawn to the handcrafted artistic quality of the wrought-iron work and lacquered dinanderie vases. It was also one of the greatest periods in fine art with the advent centered in Paris of cubism, surrealism and orphism.”Dr. Stephen KellyThe space features a spectacular interior that was originally designed by Geoffrey Bradfield and the late Jay Spectre. It includes a large two story solarium and more recently updated by Mr. Bradfield with a parchment-paneled drawing room, Venetian plaster foyer and macassar ebony-paneled library.
The Kelly Gallery is located at 154 East 71st Street (Between 3rd and Lexington Avenues), New York City. Hours of operation are: Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. The Weekender: Style and Grace
at The Waldorf AstoriaInterior designer, Geoffrey Bradfield celebrated the launch of his new book, A 21st Century Palace, at a hotel that is as iconic as the designer himself. It was an evening to remember. Geoffrey’s latest publication is about a Mexican palace, and it is the first in a series of books about some of the marvelous homes that he designed worldwide.Pictured: Geoffrey Bradfield
Invited guests were welcomed to an opulent setting where he presided over a 18th century French court where models wore beautiful garbs, and some of the most intricate, and wondrous body paint by make up artists, The Parker Twins. Some of his distinguished guests included Michelle Gerber Klein, Sheikh Abdullah Rahman, Baroness Gabriella von Langendorff, to name a few.

Iris Apfel and Dara Caponigro were together at Sotheby’s this week for an evening of Style and Design. The VERANDA Magazine Editor-in-Chief delved into what is style and how do you carry it off and make it work for you. No one was better suited to answer those questions than the veteran fashion icon Iris Apfel. Her work had and continues to have a major impact in fashion and interior design. Although we only had one hour with the grande dame herself, I felt as if we’ve spent the entire evening with her. There was so much to be said and much more to talk about, and I’m so pleased to have been part of the experience. One of the things that stood out was Iris explaining that it’s alright to grow old gracefully, be different, and create your individual flair without caring too much about what others think. Because at the end of the day, life must go on – with style.Dara Caponigro and Iris ApfelIris Apfel and Veranda Editor in Chief, Dara CaponigroIris ApfelDara Caponigro, John Roselli, and Iris ApfelPhoto courtesy Annie Watt -
A Must Read: A 21st Century Palace by Geoffrey Bradfield
The pages of Geoffrey Bradfield‘s latest interior design book will certainly take you to one of the most breathtaking and soaring palaces in the world. Get ready to be transported to a rich virtual journey through the creation of one of this stunning new breed of palaces: a high-rise residence Bradfield designed in the heart of Mexico City. It showcases all the requisite building blocks essential to the development of any great modernist collection: museum-worthy 20th- and 21st-century painting and sculpture, ravishing Art Deco furnishings (my favorite!) and extravagant materials cut and quarried from halfway around the planet. This is the first volume in a series that will examine the astonishing particulars of five distinct contemporary palaces located around the world. Geoffrey Bradfield is well equipped to tell this story. “Functional Opulence” is the key to his designs, which draw inspiration from the Orient, African Primitivism, and Art Deco. His work incorporates fine art and antiques with modern materials and high tech accessories, attaching the same sculptural value to utility objects as to important pieces of art. The look, drawn from the twentieth century, results in intensely comfortable and superbly elegant environments that delight the eye, mind and body alike. In 1991, he co-wrote Point of View: Design by Jay Spectre. He is the eloquent writer of Celebration: Christmas in New York, published in 1993, and a book showcasing his work of the last decade, Geoffrey Bradfield – Defining Millennium Modern was published in 2004. In 2009, he wrote Geoffrey Bradfield Ex Arte which was published by Panache Partners. The book featured a compilation of his international projects. Feel free to contact me, if you’d like to have a signed copy of one of the most anticipated book of this season.
